Merriweather FONTLOG

This file provides detailed information on Merriweather font Software. This information should be distributed along with the Merriweather fonts and any derivative works.

Merriweather is useful for creating long texts for books or articles, headlines and captions.

Basic Font Information

Merriweather offers a Renaissance warmth while using proportions which are space-saving. It is suitable for editorial design, news and other kinds of space sensitive typography. Merriweather is an evolving project and will be updated. As of now there are 8 styles (Light, Regular, Bold, Black, Light Italic, Italic, Bold Italic, Black Italic.)

There is also Merriweather Sans, a sans-serif version which closely harmonizes with the weights and styles of this serif family.

Variable Font versions of this family are now in beta ( being tested ).

Merriweather is actively developed and is improved upon periodically. For more information and to stay updated, see Eben Sorkin's blog and Flickr, and follow the Merriweather Twitter microblog:

Merriweather is a Unicode typeface family that supports languages that use the Latin script and its variants, and could be expanded to support other scripts.

More specifically, this release supports the following Unicode ranges: Latin-1, Latin-2, Cyrillic, Turkish, Windows Baltic, Macintosh Character Set

Contributing

There are 2 source files, one for Romans and one of Italics, in the GlyphsApp format.

Build Process

The sources can be built with FontMake, but I've put together some specific build scripts to pass the fonts through some steps that fix metadata issues.

The build process requires you to open up a terminal and navigate to this project's directory.

Step 1: Install Requirements

I suggest using a Python virtual environment to build this project. If you've never set up a virtual environment before, read more virtualenv in this guide.

First, set up a Python 3 virtual environment with:

virtualenv -p python3 venv

Here, venv will be the name of the virtual environment and of the folder holding its dependencies. Before you install dependencies or run the build, you need to activate it with:

source venv/bin/activate

To operate the scripts within this repo, install requirements by pointing pip to the requirements.txt file:

pip install -r requirements.txt

To exit out of the virtual environment, you can use the command deactivate (just remember to start it up again if you come back).

Step 2: Give permissions to build scripts

The first time you run the build, you will need to give run permissions to the build scripts.

On the command line, navigate to the project folder (cd Encode-Sans), and then give permissions to the shell scripts with:

chmod +x sources/build.sh

Using chmod +x gives shell scripts execute permissions. In general, before you do this for shell scripts, you should probably take a look through their contents, to be sure they aren't doing anything you don't want them to do. The ones in this repo simply build from the GlyphsApp sources and apply various fixes to the results.

Step 3: Run the build scripts!

Now, run the build script by entering its relative path in your terminal:

sources/build.sh

If you've set up your dependencies correctly, it should build and place fonts into the /fonts sub-directory of the project.
