latest-version-or-tag

Finds latest semver from the package or git tag

NPM

Build status semantic-release js-standard-style

Why

If you use semantic release to publish your NPM modules (and you should!), then your package.json has a generic 0.0.0-semantic-release or 0.0.0-development. What is the actual latest version of the package?

This little utility fetches it - uses either package.json version or the latest Git tag (according to semver comparison)

The latest version is useful for exception reporting for example, especially used together with Git SHA.

Install and use

$ npm install latest-version-or-tag
$ $(npm bin)/latest-version-or-tag
latest version 1.2.0

Or use it as a module

const latest = require('latest-version-or-tag')
latest()
  .then(console.log)     // just version string
  .catch(console.error)

Debug

Run the module with environment variable

$ DEBUG=latest latest-version-or-tag

Small print
