AAP-LV2: LV2 backend and ports to AAP

This repository contains LV2 backend (or wrapper, or whatever) support for Audio Plugins For Android, as well as minimum samples.

There are also dedicated repos for non-trivial LV2 plugin ports and so on (not everything works as expected) listed at AAP Wiki.

Building

aap-lv2 contains the base library AAR to be referenced by each plugin port (androidaudioplugin-lv2).

There is a normative build script for GitHub Actions (see its workflows.yml), including dependencies.

For our local desktop development, make should take care of the builds.

Our aap-lv2 plugin ports make use of the common GitHub Actions build setup as the reusable workflows too.

Limitations

First of all, we cover partial feature set of the entire LV2 specifications.

LV2 Dynamic Manifest feature expects that the hosting environment has access to writable temporary directory. It is wrong assumption and LV2 specification has to remove any reference to FILE* in the public API. It is not supported in AAP.

Also, LV2 State makePath and mapPath features are not supported for the same reason (while they are meant to make things relocatable across platforms).

LV2 UI implementation varies and most of those are not designed to be portable to Android. Therefore none of the UIs are ported and there is no immediate chance to get them covered in AAP.

Importing LV2 plugins

There are couple of steps to import existing LV2 plugsin into AAP world:

Those binaries from LV2 SDK are built from source in androidaudioplugin-lv2 module.

Some dependency Android binaries in some porting apps are built from android-native-audio-builders repository. Namely, DPF plugin ports are built there.

From desktop LV2 plugin developers' point of view, AAP-LV2 packaging is not straightforward, because the file layouts is differrent from that on Linux. Android native libraries are usually packaged like:

Those lib/*.lv2/*.so files cannot be dynamically loaded unlike Linux desktop. They have to be moved to lib/[cpu-arch]/ directory in the apk. Other LV2 manifests are packaged under assets/lv2 directory. Therefore, the file layout in the final apk is:

import-lv2-deps.sh script does this task for aap-mda-lv2 (in its own repo). Similarly, import-guitarix-deps.sh does it for aap-guitarix (ditto), and so on.

Note that this directory layout is different from source directory. In the sources, those .so files are placed under src/main/jniLibs.

AAP Metadata

AAP needs aap_metadata.xml under res/xml directory. Creating one based on some existing port is not difficult, but it can also be generated from LV2 manifests in the plugin directory, using aap-import-lv2-metadata tool:

Rewrite local file dependencies in code

Unlike desktop LV2 plugins, we cannot really depend on local filesystems including temporary files.

There are couple of LV2 features such as LV2 Dynamic Manifest, and they will not work as specified. Things like state:makePath is a good part, which reduces environment-dependency, but plugins have to be carefully ported so that resolving file from a file path does not result in access to unexpected paths, they would just fail (as long as Android file system security works).

LV2_PATH workarounds

There is a big limitation on Android platform: it is not possible to get list of asset directories in Android, meaning that querying audio plugins based on the filesystem is not doable. All those plugins must be therefore explicitly listed at some manifest.

To address this issue, AAP-LV2 plugin service takes a list of LV2 asset paths from aap_metadata.xml, which are used for LV2_PATH settings. It is taken care by org.androidaudioplugin.lv2.AudioPluginLV2ServiceExtension and plugin developers shouldn't have to worry about it, as long as they add the following metadata within <service> for AudioPluginService in AndroidManifest.xml:

Resolve resources from assets or files

Sometimes, depending on how we implement a plugin, we might want to resolve files either from assets or in the local user (file) storage. By default, it resolves resources from the assets. But if any plugin implementation code depends on file access API (stdio, std C++ API, std::filesystem etc.) or needs file writes (not just reads), we can indicate the plugin to read and write files. It is Service-level specification. To indicate file I/O instead of assets I/O, add this element under the <service> element for org.androidaudioplugin.AudioPluginService in AndroidManifest.xml:

converting LV2 metadata to AAP metadata

NOTE: this section is kind of outdated: we can skip <parameters> section nowadays and therefore we could just fill basic metadata (such as name and developer attributes) which is easily doable with manual work.

The remaining content of this section contains old metadata sections which are not generated by the latset tool anymore.


We provide a metadata generator tool app-import-lv2-metadata and ask LV2 plugin developers (importers) to describe everything in aap-metadata.xml.

For content, if a port is atom:atomPort and atom:supports has midi:MidiEvent, then it is midi. Any LV2 port that is lv2:AudioPort are regarded as audio. Anything else is other in AAP.

The plugin category becomes Instrument if and only if it is lv2:InstrumentPlugin. Anything else falls back to Effect.

We don't detect any impedance mismatch between TTL and metadata XML; LV2 backend implementation uses "lilv" which only loads TTL. lilv doesn't assure port description correctness in TTL either (beyond what lv2validate does as a tool, not runtime).

(We decided to NOT support shorthand metadata notation like <plugin backend='LV2' assets='lv2/eg-amp.lv2' product='eg-amp.lv2' /> in aap_metadata.xml because it will make metadata non-queryable to normal Android app developers. Also, we shouldn't need Service code running to just let it send back metadata to host only for querying. It should be self-explanatory.)

Platform features and modules

This aap-lv2 repo contains LV2 SDK components as submodules:

Those private fork contains changes for Android (add Android asset support in particular).

cerbero fork

For some plugins, the actual binaries and their dependencies are built using cerbero build system in atsushieno/android-native-audio-builders repository. Cerbero is a comprehensive build system that cares all standard Android ABIs and builds some complicated projects like glib (which has many dependencies) and cairo. Though Cerbero is designed only to build Cerbero and co. and not meant to be used like this project does, so we take it at our own risk.

We would keep using cerbero as the primary build engine, until ndkports or vcpkg becomes really usable. Currently both of them are no-go yet (ndkports cannot build basic autotools-based projects that has any dependency, and vcpkg only cares about Windows in practice).

LV2 forks

There are couple of lv2 related source repositories, namely serd and lilv. Their common assumption is that they have access to local files, which is not true about Android. They are forked from the original sources and partly rewritten to get working on Android.

And note that access to assets is not as simple as that to filesystem. It is impossible to enumerate assets at runtime. They have to be explicitly named and given. Therefore there are some plugin loader changes in our lilv fork.

Another thing to note is that we check in serd_config.h, sord_config.h, sratom_config.h and lilv_config.h directly in the source tree, which are generated from x86 build of android-native-audio-builders. If they have to be rebuilt (for e.g. updated submodules), rebuild and copy the generated headers again.

Profiling audio processing

aap-lv2 records traces for aap-lv2 process() calls and the actual DSP's audio processing at lilv_run(), using ATrace API. The former is to observe if there is expensive pre-processing and post-processing, and the latter is to see if the DSP itself is performing well.

aap-lv2 codebase is distributed under the MIT license.

LV2 toolkit core parts (serd/sord/sratom/lilv/lv2) are under the ISC license.

There are some sources copied from jalv project mentioned in androidaudioplugin-lv2 sources, symap.*, as well as those files under zix directory, and they are distributed under the ISC license.

ayumi-lv2 and ayumi are distributed under the MIT license.

Each of those plugin sets is packaged into one application respectively.
